How to Know if You Have Whiplash

The trauma of an auto accident

One of the most traumatic things that can happen to you is a car wreck. Even if you’re not seriously injured, it’s frightening to think of what “might have happened.” But it’s not just traumatic for your mind and emotions. It’s also traumatic for your body.

In a collision, literally tons of force can come slamming through your body. Your muscles tighten, your tendons and ligaments are pulled and twisted. And hopefully, you’re lucky enough to walk away without broken bones or worse.

But all that impact and all that muscle tension can actually cause a serious injury of their own. It’s called whiplash. If you have been in an accident recently, you need to be examined by a professional chiropractor for signs of whiplash.

How do you know if you have whiplash?

One of the biggest problems with whiplash is that you may not know at first. Because of the mental shock and emotional trauma, you might not even feel the pain. Your pain may appear a few hours later or even the next day. Then your pain may increase, often not fully surfacing until about 72 hours after the accident.

The sudden movement of the neck at the moment of impact can cause serious damage. This can affect the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and even bones of the neck. The vertebrae in the neck may also become misaligned or even cracked during the accident.

Whiplash Symptoms

It’s common to be sore after an auto accident. The body’s reaction to the sudden impact can cause pain throughout the entire body. But if you develop one or more of the following symptoms, you may have whiplash.

  • Pain and stiffness in the shoulders and neck
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Dizzy spells that come and go
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Headaches stemming from the top of the neck and the base of the skull
  • Fatigue that develops after the accident

Other causes of whiplash

Most whiplash is caused by auto accidents. However, you may still have whiplash even if you haven’t been in a wreck. Other common causes of whiplash are:

  • Blows to the head during full contact sports
  • Falling or diving into the water from a tall platform
  • A slip and fall incident that stresses the neck
  • Falling objects that push down on the head and the spinal column

Don’t hesitate to get help

After an accident or injury, it can be tempting to try and “sleep it off.” And the general soreness can subside naturally. However, serious damage can occur if you avoid proper treatment. If you have been in an accident, seek treatment within a week to avoid aggravating your injuries. Without prompt treatment, complications can arise such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Ligament damage
  • Spinal disc damage
  • Nerve compression
  • Nerve damage
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Sleep disturbance

Treatment options for whiplash

For years, victims of whiplash often had to resort to pain management through narcotics or even surgery to find relief. Now, with the advancement of spinal care through gentle, noninvasive Chiropractic, you can get relief without the dangerous risks and side effects of these traditional approaches.
