ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, impacts the lives of an increasing number of children in the Tulsa area. Children experience stress and pressure on a higher level than ever before, and as a result, more and more children seem to struggle with attention and behavioral issues.

Children naturally have shorter attention spans and need more activity than adults. It is important not to make the dangerous mistake of diagnosing a normal child with an attention disorder. However, if you are concerned that your child may have ADHD, look for the following symptoms to know whether you need to seek a specific evaluation for them.

Common Symptoms of ADHD

  • An inability to concentrate or stay in one place for long periods of time
  • Acting impulsively with an inability to wait their turn, allow others to speak, or to think before acting out
  • An inability to sit for long periods of time
  • Fidgeting with their hands or feet
  • An inability to remain quiet for long periods of time
  • Preoccupied with other activities and noises instead of the task at hand
  • Tendency to talk more than others around them
  • Commonly losing things and an inability to complete assigned tasks
  • Disorganized

Options for ADHD Treatment in Tulsa

The most common treatment for ADHD is the prescription of the class 2 psychotropic drug methylphenidate, or Ritalin®. Ritalin® is a schedule II controlled substance related to amphetamines and cocaine. The side effects, of this and other popular drugs, including personality changes and permanent changes to the brain, cause many parents to look for alternatives.

Chiropractic: Pure and Natural

For years, drugs were the only way to get help for ADHD, but since ADHD appears as a neurological disorder and chiropractic care attempts to reduce nervous system disturbances, many parents who want a natural, non-drug solution for their child have found chiropractic care helpful.

Instead of treating the various symptoms of hyperactivity, we look for disturbances to the child’s nervous system. We often find problems caused by spinal distortions in the upper neck. In fact, this link between the spine, brain stem dysfunction and ADHD is common.

A thorough chiropractic examination can reveal noticeable spinal distortion, even a reversal of the normal neck curve. That’s why we often recommend a schedule of safe and natural chiropractic adjustments to help reduce the accompanying nervous system tension.

Often, correction of these spinal disturbances significantly reduces the symptoms of ADHD. Children have longer attention spans, greater concentration, and feel less need for excessive activity, talking, and fidgeting.
